The -=*Turkey Hams*=- were originally formed out of the class members of Air Warrior Training Academy class #8. The term Turkey Ham was coined on April 27th, 1992. It's purpose at the time was to describe someone who doesn't eat red meat but is a character on the radio in AW. This is a perfect description of Quarters, the CO.
The squad became 'official' sometime during the first week of May, 1992. The first organized squad mission was run on Sunday, May 10th, 1992.
The purpose and meaning of the -=*Turkey Hams*=- has changed over the years. Since we were the first squadron to ever be formed from an AWTA class, the Hams limited membership to AWTA grads for a while. Score and points have never been driving forces for the Hams, yet we do hold the distinction of being the #1 squadron for Real Time Campaign #1. We are also responsible for staging one of the most successful B17 raids on another country's #1 airstrip. Check out the film Omlete.cam to see this great attack. The Hams also enjoy being a part of the Fourth Fighter Bomber Group with partner squads the Gunfighters and the Warhawks.
The -=*Turkey Hams*=- are now a very laid back group of fliers. Due to scheduling restraints organized squad nights are rare. Over the years we've had many members (past and present) reach positions of high responsibility in the Air Warrior world. Quite a few of the AWTA and TNT/SAT trainers are Hams. Spellbound, an ex-Ham, is now the head of scheduling organized scenarios in Air Warrior. A number of quotes in the current AW manual are from knowledgable Hams. And lastly, Quarters is responsible for the plane data charts and tables in the AW manual and is also one of the assistant sysops on GEnie's Air Warrior Roundtable.
